The first step I took was to paint on a layer of gesso. Once the gesso dried, I applied acrylic paint with a sponge. The type of paint I used is really cheap paint from Walmart called "Apple Barrel". I think its craft paint to be honest. The first color I applied was a plain yellow. The second color I applied around the outside of the page is a plain brown. This combo of brown and yellow is one of my faves. I never cared for brown until I started playing around with it. Brown goes with soooo many different colors! The dark brown around the edges just makes the yellow center burst yellow burst!
Now for the heart...I cut the heart out of a folded piece of paper like you do in 1st grade. Yep, fold a piece of paper and cut. The heart was painted brown with craft paint, and inked with archival ink through the checkerboard stencil. I set that aside until I was ready to piece everything.
The flowers on top of the heart are a Penny Black Stamp. This is the first Penny Black Stamp I own! It was delivered last week and I'm super excited about it! So, I stamped the image and colored it in with colored pencils. Once I cut the flowers out, I inked the edges with Victorian Velvet Distress Ink all around. This is a clear stamp FYI. I do like it, but, I do believe that the rubber cling stamps are a much crisper stamp.
Every single time I read that saying, my mind finishes the phrase and goes right to thoughts of my Grandma. If you don't know, the phrase ends with...when you're fast asleep. My Grandma had a huge hand in raising me. And she was my neighbor for 25 years until I got married. I was over my Grandparents house all the time. She was, is, and always will mean the world to me, and be a huge part of my life. When I was little my Gram bought me Cinderella (on VHS!). There is a scene where little birds are on Cinderella's lap and she starts singing to them...A dream is a wish your heart makes, when you're fast asleep. Me and my Gram would sing that song a lot, particularly in the kitchen. Love you Gram!
The last thing I did was go around the edge of the heart with a marker and blend it in with my finger to give the heart depth. It really makes the page come to life.
